The Last of Us creators haven't discussed potential spinoffs to the HBO show, though they are open to them. Based on the video game, the post-apocalyptic drama was created for television by Craig Mazin, also known for HBO's Chernobyl, and Neil Druckmann, who developed the game. The Last of Us season 1 received widespread acclaim, resulting in 24 Emmy nominations, and was one of the most-watched HBO shows ever. This resulted in a swift season 2 renewal and has also opened the door for potential spinoffs.

Talking to The Wrap in accordance with the WGA strike guidelines, Mazin commented on the possibility of spinoffs to the hit HBO show. Though he is focused on The Last of Us season 2, the showrunner is open to spin-offs "in principle," and though he hasn't discussed spin-offs with Druckmann, he believes his co-creator "would be interested as well." Read Mazin's full response below:

We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world. I don’t know how much more Last of Us I personally would be able to do. I mean, these shows are so big, I’m sort of burning one of the precious few remaining decades I have on telling this story. But in principle, I have no issue with it whatsoever. And I’m sure Neil would be interested as well.If there was something that made sense, then I don’t see why not. My great hope is that if there is anything like that, that it’s done with as much care and respect and love as what we are applying to this series right now.

What A Last of Us Spinoff Could Be About

Last of Us season 1 was lauded for adapting Joel and Ellie's emotional journey, though the debut season was just as proficient at taking minor detours to focus on the characters they meet along their journey. This is best exemplified in episode 3, which chronicles Bill and Frank's decades-long love story and was the most acclaimed episode of the season. This story is the most conducive to a spinoff since there are many gaps in their relationship left to explore. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett even expressed interest in a Last of Us spinoff for Bill and Frank.

Melanie Lynskey's Kathleen was created for the HBO show, and it would be interesting to see a spinoff showing how the soft-spoken and outwardly sweet character became leader of the revolutionary movement in Kansas City. The season 1 finale revealed that Firefly leader Marlene had a close relationship with Ellie's mother Anna, another character who doesn't appear in the games. A potential spinoff could explore Marlene's background and her relationship with Anna, which Merle Dandridge has expressed interest in. Though Last of Us spinoffs have yet to be discussed, they seem likely due to the show's rich and expansive world.
