Star Wars: Skeleton Crew director Jake Schreier discusses how elements of Jon Watts' style from the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man trilogy shine through in the new Star Wars show. Skeleton Crew was created by Watts and Christopher Ford. The show is a coming-of-age story in the vein of the 1980s Amblin movies, and will follow a group of kids trying to get home while lost in the galaxy with the help of a Jedi played by Jude Law.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Beef and Thunderbolts, Schreier also discusses working on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. He reveals that the show's creators, Watts and Ford, are friends of his from film school and praises Watts' style and evolution. Schreier also teases that a lot of the enthusiasm and passion from the MCU Spider-Man trilogy show up in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew as well. Check out Schreier's full quote below:

Jake Schreier: For me so much of what I know about filmmaking, I learned just from arguing with Jon, Ford, Ben, and our other friends from film school. So I think just getting to see his development as a director in all of these different worlds has been really special. There's just this kind of infectious enthusiasm that he brings to the work and even in the way he approaches that. I think you can see that come through in Spider-Man, obviously, and how much Tom brought to it. I think that there's a lot of that in Skeleton Crew that'll be very fun for people to watch. Editor's Note: This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and the show covered here would not exist without the labor of the writers and actors in both unions.

How Spider-Man's Coming Of Age Arc Can Inspire Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

The heart of Watts' Spider-Man trilogy was the coming-of-age journey for Tom Holland's Peter Parker as himself and his superhero alterego Spider-Man. The loss of innocence as he learns what the real cost of being a hero is and the sacrifices necessary to protect the ones he loves, even if it means living without them. Peter matured from an overly eager high schooler to a man who lost everything but continued to help people and do what was right.

While Star Wars: Skeleton Crew seems like it will have a bit of a lighter tone, taking inspiration from Amblin, the coming-of-age arc that Watts completed with Spider-Man will likely influence how the kids in the Star Wars show grow as well. As they go on an adventure with a Jedi throughout the galaxy, searching for a way home, they'll undoubtedly grow from the experiences they have while traveling. This could include everything from pirates and smugglers to remnants of the Empire or crime syndicates in the Outer Rim.

The MCU's Spider-Man trilogy does a tremendous job of showing Peter's growth across each movie. He may start and end as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but he is a vastly different person under that mask. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will likely bring that same heart and evolution to the lead characters, which could mean both great losses and incredible victories. But the combination of Watts and Amblin's style of coming-of age story seems like the perfect new storytelling style to bring to a galaxy far, far away.
