Only 1 Ted Lasso Spinoff Idea Can Match The Original Show (& It's The Most Obvious One)

If Apple decides to explore a Ted Lasso spinofThere's one specific Ted Lasso spinoff show idea that could end up being just as good as the original show, and it's the most obvious option. Apple's Ted Lasso ran for 34 episodes across three seasons and has been the streaming services awards show darling. Even though Apple hasn't confirmed whether Ted Lasso's season 3 finale was the end of the series, many of the storylines were tied up. However, there were a few plot threads and teases that could end up launching spinoffs.

Ted Lasso season 3's ending followed the AFC Richmond team's fight to win the Premier League. They did their part, winning a tough match against West Ham, but Manchester City's win ruins any chance at the top spot. Still, Ted's achievements as Richmond's coach didn't go unnoticed despite his decision to leave and return to Kansas City. Meanwhile, AFC Richmond's owner, Rebbeca, decided to sell 49% of the team shares, but another team endeavor could be on the horizon.

An AFC Richmond Women's Team Spinoff Could Match Ted Lasso

Though Ted Lasso season 4 could still happen, a spinoff seems more likely at this point. Thankfully, Apple has a variety of Ted Lasso spinoff ideas to explore, but it will be tough to match the wholesomeness of the original series without feeling too derivative. Director Declan Lowney pitched four Ted Lasso spinoffs, including focuses on Ted coaching in Kansas City and Roy's takeover of AFC Richmond as the new manager. However, the most exciting option is a Ted Lasso spinoff following Hannah Waddingham's Rebecca and Juno Temple's Keeley running an AFC Richmond women's team.

In "So Long, Farewell," a montage revealed a proposal sent by Keeley to Rebecca teasing the idea of a women's team. It might be the obvious choice for a Ted Lasso spinoff, but it's also the best choice. The show would still have a foundation of Rebecca and Keeley, two crucial original characters, as they are surrounded by a new supporting cast. It could follow the powerful duo building a team from top to bottom while continuing the common themes presented through Ted Lasso regarding discrimination and inequality in sports. It follows a similar premise, but it's different enough to appeal to a new segment of viewers.

Why It's The Perfect Time For A Ted Lasso Women's Team Spinoff

Not only would it be wise of Apple to continue the Ted Lasso universe while the buzz is still high, but it would also be a perfect time to explore a female-centric spinoff. Women's sports are growing worldwide, especially when it comes to football (or soccer, depending on the location). As leagues continue to grow and become more competitive, interest in anything that connects to women's teams also increases. Rebecca and Keeley have shown immense support for one another during their friendship, and it would be fitting to see them unite to power more women.

A Ted Lasso spinoff could essentially bring even more attention to the importance of women's leagues while still holding onto the charm that made the original show so beloved. Interestingly, the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup drew record viewership in some countries, including the United States. It would be beneficial for Apple to embrace the interest by following an AFC Richmond women's team. It could also allow for prominent female players to appear for cameos, much like how Ted Lasso did with featured real footballers and pundits.

An AFC Richmond Women's Team Spinoff Would Be Different

Ted Lasso has proven that Rebecca and Keeley work great together, and it would be thrilling to see them team up again for an even bigger mission of developing a women's team. The struggles of putting together a team from scratch would be far different from Ted Lasso's premise of bringing in an inexperienced coach for an underachieving team. Everyone involved will be at a significant disadvantage, and the discrimination that inherently comes with women's sports, in general, would be presented to a high degree. It also allows for a new slate of supporting cast members who can share the spotlight with numerous subplots, following Ted Lasso's approach through a fresh lens.

A spinoff focused on Rebecca and Keeley's new women's team would obviously bring back Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple in prominent roles, but it would also open the door for Ted Lasso cameos. Those connected to the duo, such as Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Roy (Brett Goldstein), and Jamie (Phil Dunster), would make sense. The same could be said for Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), who is still coaching the men's Richmond team.

Speaking of the team, players could pop in at any time as a women's team would likely be cross-promoted with the existing team. It would also make sense for Jason Sudeikis to cameo in a Ted Lasso spinoff to celebrate Rebecca and Keeley's new team. Having Sudeikis return as Ted, even briefly, would be a fitting way to pass the torch to a new group of lead characters.
