Spider-Man: Homecoming's Credits Scene Hits A Lot Harder After Sitting Through Marvel's Phase 4

SUMMARY

  •  Spider-Man: Homecoming's post-credits scene joke about waiting for post-credits scenes has become worse in the MCU's Phase 5.
  •  Marvel's choice to continue having post-credits scenes despite making fun of fans for waiting is questionable and has increased their importance.
  •  While it makes sense for the MCU to introduce new characters through post-credits scenes, Marvel needs to set a limit to avoid them feeling obligatory.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming post-credits scene joke has become way worse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 5. Tom Holland's Spider-Man has become one of the most popular heroes in the MCU over the years, with the actor soon set to return for Marvel's Spider-Man 4, which still does not have a release date as the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes have paused work on the film. While exactly what the future might entail for Holland's Spider-Man is unclear, the character's past, specifically his first solo movie, can be linked to the current MCU.

Before getting the chance to star in his own Spider-Man movie, Holland made his MCU debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Despite being part of Iron Man's team after Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark recruited Peter Parker in his home, Spider-Man shared some interesting moments with Chris Evans' Captain America. That was further explored through Evans appearing in a couple of fun short scenes as Captain America in Holland's Spider-Man: Homecoming; however, one of them has become way worse in the MCU's Phase 5.

Homecoming Showed The MCU Needed To Cut Down On Post-Credit Reveals 5 Years Ago

Spider-Man: Homecoming's post-credits scene joke saw Captain America appear to continue recording his PSAs to kids in schools across the country, which first made an appearance in the movie when Peter was in gym class. In the movie's second post-credits scene, Evans returned in his full Captain America costume from The Avengers to deliver a new speech about patience. The scene is clearly making fun of the MCU tradition of having fans wait until the very last second of a movie to catch all of Marvel's post-credits scenes.

While there are some laughs to be had with the scene, Marvel's choice to make fun of its audience for waiting for post-credits scenes and then continue to have them in pretty much every movie rather than cutting down is certainly questionable. More than that, after Spider-Man: Homecoming joked about the ongoing tradition, Marvel started to introduce many new characters through post-credits scenes instead of having a more balanced approach with jokes, meaning the studio made fun of fans waiting for the scenes, and they seemingly increased their importance.

The MCU's Post-Credit Revival Makes Sense - But Has To Have A Limit

With the end of the Infinity Saga, the MCU's Phases 4 and 5 have had to introduce many new characters to take over from the veterans that have left or are soon leaving the universe. Because of that, the MCU's post-credits scenes continuing makes sense; however, Marvel needs to understand that there is a limit. Several MCU projects have used their post-credits scenes to reveal characters and plot lines that will seemingly be essential to future stories, and after Spider-Man: Homecoming joked about the MCU's post-credits scenes feeling obligatory, it would make sense if Marvel limited their usage, so they don't feel that way.
