Star Wars Made History With Ahsoka Episode 1's Lightsaber Fight

The lightsaber fight that takes place at the end of Ahsoka episode 1 has made Star Wars history for all of the franchise's live-action projects.

SUMMARY

  •  Star Wars' Ahsoka series features the first live-action lightsaber duel between women, a historic moment for the franchise.
  •  There will be more lightsaber duels between women in the series, with shots from the trailer hinting at future fights.
  •  Ahsoka's introduction of female-led lightsaber duels opens the door for future Star Wars projects to explore similar battles, both in TV and film.

Star Wars has already made history with the lightsaber fight featured in Ahsoka episode 1. Heavy lightsaber combat has been promised in the show, with marketing placing a heavy emphasis on a number duels. A few have already occurred, as Sabine Wren took on Shin Hati in episode 1 and Ahsoka Tano clashed blades with the mysterious Inquisitor Marrok in episode 2. More lightsaber duels are on the way, as Ahsoka marketing has centered around a confrontation between Ahsoka and former Jedi Baylan Skoll.

Lightsaber duels are a hallmark of Star Wars, with each of the nine Skywalker saga films including at least one in varying degrees. The battles allow combatants to demonstrate their skills, display their emotions, and reveal power levels, and limb are often lost. Animated Star Wars projects made a habit out of continuing this trend, with Ahsoka a frequent participant in duels herself. Star Wars has nearly done it all in live-action, but Ahsoka marks a first for the franchise that change the game for lightsaber fights.

  • Ahsoka Contains The First Live-Action Lightsaber Duel Between Women

The fight between Sabine and Shin is the first time in Star Wars live-action that two women are seen clashing lightsaber blades. While this has happened quite frequently in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, such an occurrence has never transpired in any live-action Star Wars movie or TV show. The only time Star Wars has come close is with the duel between Ahsoka and Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth in The Mandalorian season 2, though Elsbeth was wielding the beskar spear instead of a lightsaber.

  • Will We See More Lightsaber Duels Between Women In The Series?

Trailer footage has confirmed that Sabine and Shin will face each other again, which definitively confirms another fight between women will happen. When considering other characters, it could be possible for Ahsoka to face another female adversary who's a lightsaber wielder, whether it be Shin herself or someone who manages to get their hands on a lightsaber. Ahsoka and Sabine could also end up sparring with their lightsabers as a part of the continuation of Sabine's Jedi training, which would technically count as a duel between them.

Either way, this historic lightsaber fight in Ahsoka has opened a promising door for Star Wars. While this series may not have many more lightsaber duels between women, upcoming series such as The Acolyte could add to the history Ahsoka has now set into motion. The upcoming movie centered around Rey's New Jedi Order also presents a similar opportunity. The lightsaber fights that have taken place between female characters in animation are still just as important, but to bring those to live-action in Ahsoka is a huge and exciting step.
