What Reason Gary Lineker will never take part in BBC's Strictly Come Dancing?

Things would have to go 'seriously wrong' for the Leicester legend to strut his stuff for us

It’s almost Strictly season with a whole new batch of celebrities set to waltz their way into our hearts. However, one of Leicester’s most famous faces is unlikely to ever grace the dancefloor.Leicester City legend, Match of the Day host and crisp salesman extraordinaire Gary Lineker is one of the BBC’s biggest stars. He is now regularly the highest paid presenter at the corporation, but that does not mean he wants to take part in the BBC’s biggest entertainment show.

Strictly has been on our screens since 2004, but Gary has not competed despite some fellow footballers and BBC Sport stars strutting their stuff over the years. He has made it clear it won’t happen either. Reports over the years suggest Gary has been among the Strictly producers’ main targets to take part for some time. However, despite numerous approaches he has rejected the offers. In previous interviews, Gary has spoken of the belief that Strictly Come Dancing is for those in need of a career boost - something he does not feel he needs. Speaking to Fubar Radio, he said: “If you ever see me on [Strictly] you’ll know things have gone seriously wrong.”

While Gary has now moved into other TV genres, notably his hosting of ITV quiz show Sitting on a Fortune, the world of reality TV is something he steers clear of. In 2022, he was being repeatedly guessed as the identity of Doughnuts in The Masked Singer, but strenuously denied it was him - or would ever be him. Ultimately, Gary was proven right as Doughnuts was fellow England striker Michael Owen, but he got involved in the fun prior to the reveal, telling viewers: “Ok I admit it: It’s not me. But if it somehow is without me knowing, I promise that I’ll ambush [Jonathan Ross] and spurt my jam all over his face.”

Gary’s aversion to reality TV programmes shows he’s clearly an adamant sort and over the years he has revealed some of the reasons behind his rejection of Strictly. A key reason is the Saturday night clash with Match of the Day and while the two shows do not broadcast live at the same time, much prep is needed in the hours beforehand for Gary to host the Premier League highlights.

A more key problem is Gary’s main reasoning though. Speaking to the Express in 2014, he said: “I won’t be doing the show. I’m an athlete but I really can’t dance and I don’t think I could even learn.” So, Gary Lineker on Strictly is something we’ll never see. Well, never say never, but the Leicester legend seems very adamant we won’t be seeing his cha cha cha anytime soon. Some may say that's a shame, while others may sigh with relief - Gary included.
